How Satellite Remote Sensing can help Agriculture?

Global availability of high resolution satellite remote sensing data from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and ESA (European Space Agency) has opened a vast number of possibilities for agriculture applications.

Satellite remote sensing includes working with different bands leading to different products such as vegetation growth indices (e.g. NDVI, EVI, SAVI, LSWI, NDWI), temperature, soil moisture, evapotranspiration, water spread area and rainfall. These products often become confusing to a general audience and Satyukt plan to demystify the application of these products for agriculture applications through the series of webinars.

With the emergence of satellite sensors, agro-hydrological (A-H) variables can be acquired and analyzed in near real time with much ease. The webinar focuses on the usage of multiple satellite data to acquire fine resolution (farm scale) A-H variables, as individual satellites may have compromised spatial or temporal resolution. Dynamic forecasting of agriculture yield is possible by ensembling A-H variables with a machine learning algorithm

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Get familiar with the basics of available satellite data.
  • Different products – their strengths and weaknesses specific to the agriculture applications.
  • Agriculture specific use cases and case studies.
  • How to access the satellite data.
